1. Can you give us a brief on your company?

APAR industries was set up in the year 1958 and over the years it has evolved into a US $ 850 million diversified conglomerate offering value added products and services in the areas of power transmission conductors and petroleum specialty products.
Headquartered in Mumbai, India and Production facilities located at Rabale (Maharashtra), Silvassa (Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli), Athola, Umbergaon and Khatalwada (Gujarat).

2. Do you have any sister concern or have you diversified into a whole new vertical?

No. However we manufacture automotive lubricant under a license agreement with eni S.p.A, Italy, in 2007, to produce and market high-end automotive and industrial lubricants under the erstwhile AGIP brand in India.

3.You’ve been one of the leading players in your industry, what has been the company’s growth strategy and high point?

In transformer oil we have been the market leader in the domestic market and globally we rank no.5. Our strength lies in our constant en-devour to strengthen our products as per the new specifications.

4.How do you ensure you meet the requirements of your customer? Do you have a dedicated R&D team in place?

We have an R&D center which is recognized by the DSIR. It an independent unit. We also have a NABL accredited lab in place which helps in developing new products.

5. What percentage of your customers would you rate as loyal customers?

As APAR, we don’t corelate loyalty with competition. The brand has a very strong presence which gives us the first right of refusal, in that way the customers have been very loyal to us.

6.We are aware that you are well spread out across the globe; however are there any specific regions/ countries that you are looking to foray into?

We export to over 80 countries currently. We don’t do much is USA since it a very big market and self sufficient.

We are looking at strengthening our presence in the MENA region for which we are setting up a greenfield project in UAE since it is a more application driven market with huge potential, particularly for the white oils.

7. What is your idea of an Ideal logistics company?

Our association with Goodrich till date has been only as a supplier of Flexi-tanks. In our opinion an Ideal logistics company is one that provides a one-stop-shop solution.

8.What is the single most important benefit that you get from our service and how do you suggest we get/ maintain our fair share of attention from your company?

The service that Goodrich provides is par-excellent giving value for the money we are paying.

9.Can you give us your insight on the current market trends particularly pertaining to your industry?

The industry is highly volatile since it wholly depends on the crude oil prices and the acute shortage of hard currency in the developing countries which is one the biggest challenge in our industry.

10. What is the one thing none of your vendors do that you wish they would?

Our main vendors are the oil refineries that supply us the raw materials. In our case our vendors always have an upper hand as they control the demand and supply in the market.

11. What is your number one priority for this business unit during this fiscal year?

Our number one priority is for our volumes and profits to keep escalating.

In the case of transformer oils globally there are about 5 major players and within the domestic market also there are 5. The domestic market becomes a challenge since it is completely price driven.

The IMDG Code is produced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialist United Nations (UN) agency responsible for developing and maintaining regulatory frameworks for sea transport.
The Code’s provisions are based on recommendations developed by the UN.
The UN Model regulations provide a uniform set of safety procedures covering consignment and transport issues such as classification, identification, packing, marking and labeling, documentation, security and training.

What are dangerous goods and why are they useful?

Dangerous goods are substances or articles that can pose a threat to people, property and/or the environment. They can exist in three physical states – as a solid, liquid or gas – and can present a range of dangers in a transport environment – flammability, toxicity (poisonous) and corrosivity being the most common.

The physical state and properties affect packing, handling and transport decisions. Many dangerous goods are essential in the manufacture of other products such as cars, plastics, electronics and pharmaceuticals on which progress and world trade depends.

Different types of dangerous goods:

For transport purposes, dangerous goods are allocated to one of nine “classes”, according to the main danger they present. These are as follows:

Class 1 – Explosives
Class 2 – Gases
Class 3 – Flamable Liquids
Class 4 – Flammable solids and other flammable substances
Class 5 – Oxidising substances and organs perodixes
Class 6 – Toxic and infectious substances
Class 7 – Radioactive material
Class 8 – Corrosive substances
Class 9 – Miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles
Many of these classes are sub-divided. For, example, toxic substances are allocated to Class 6.1; infectious substances are allocated to Class 6.2

Substances or articles are classified as “dangerous goods” for sea shipments if they meet the criteria prescribed in the IMDG Code for any of these classes. The danger(s) presented by a particular substance or articles determine the safe transport procedures for it; e.g. the way it needs to be packed, whether it can be loaded in the same freight container as other dangerous goods, where it needs to be stored within the port or stowed on board the ship.

In view of which we decided to interview one of our most valued customers Mr. Ajay Singh, Manager Export of Jubilant Industries to gauge his feedback on the services being provided by Goodrich. We greatly appreciate the time taken by Mr. Ajay to provide us his valuable views.

1. Describe the nature of your Business?

The company’s diversified portfolio includes a wide range of crop nutrition, crop growth and crop protection agri-products and Performance Polymers products comprising consumer products like adhesives, wood finishes; food polymers and latex such as Vinyl Pyridine, SBR and NBR latex. Our products are supplied across the U.S.A, Europe and Far East.

2. How long have you been associated with Goodrich Maritime Pvt. Ltd.?

We have been associated with your Company for over 10 years and now there’s no looking back.

3. What is the single most important benefit that you get from our services?

We are very pleased with the consistency in the quality of the products i.e. both ISO Tanks & Flexi Tanks been provided by the company and also the reputation that Goodrich has with the liners.

4. As you look ahead into 2015, what are you personally most excited about in terms of your company’s growth?

We are definitely very excited about the coming year because we are expecting a growth rate of about 15-20 %, for which the management and staff has been putting in continuous efforts. We are going to be introducing new products and broadening our horizons geographically, and would hence be looking at utilising more Flexi-tanks of Goodrich.

5. What factors influence your decision to render services from our company?

The professional, systematic and polite approach of the staff is what sets the company apart from its competitors. Apart from that the rates provided have been very competitive. Our long association with Goodrich has been completely hassle free.

6. In the future, how do you seek to benefit from your association with our company?

We feel that the relationship will be mutually beneficial and long-term since we are planning to expand in the coming years.

7. Do you have any suggestions for improvement for both products and services?

Yes, indeed we do. It would be great if the company procured new products that are available in the market today; such as IBC Flexi’s and 40 ft. Tanks. In terms of services, we are fully satisfied.

8. Would you like to make a special mention about any employee(s) of our company?

I have personally been interacting with Mr. Pradeep Nair, Ms. Uma Kannan and Ms. Sindhu Mehta for over 7-8 years now and they have been very responsive and cooperative. Otherwise, like I mentioned earlier the service provided by the Customer Service team and the Technical team has been very good.

Do you have any suggestions for improvement for both products and services?

Yes, indeed we do. It would be great if the company procured new products that are available in the market today; such as IBC Flexi’s and 40 ft. Tanks. In terms of services, we are fully satisfied.
8. Would you like to make a special mention about any employee/s of our company?

I have personally been interacting with Pradeep Nair, Uma Kannan and Sindhu Mehta for over 7-8 years now, and they have been very responsive and cooperative. Otherwise, like I mentioned earlier, the service provided by the Customer Service team and the Technical team has been very good.

1. Can you give us a brief on your company?

Founded in 1998, Sakuma has evolved into a leading STAR Trading House, with exports to over 30 countries located in the Middle East , Africa , South East Asia and the Indian sub-continent today. We generate the majority of our business through export sale of sugar (raw/VHP, white and refined), rice, wheat, maize, raw cotton, feed meal and other agri- commodities from India and import of edible oils for home consumption .

2. Do you have any sister concern or have your diversified beyond agricultural products?

We have subsidiaries companies in Singapore, Ghana, Tanzania and Dubai. Other than agri-products, import of edible oils for trading is our regular business. We have had import of coal in the past, but presently this business is not remunerative, hence kept on the back burner.

3. Under what brand name do you sell your products to the customers? Are the products sold under a single brand name or an umbrella brand?

Currently we are not selling products under any brand name. In future we propose to develop our own brands for sugar and edible oils .

4. How often do you meet your Customers?

We meet our customers fairly often to keep abreast with market trends and their requirements. In today’s volatile situation and very competitive global markets, it is very important for us to meet customers’ demands. Our customers are spread out geographically, making it important for us to study global market trends.

5.Can you provide a recent example of a new commodity/ strategy success story? How long did it take and what are the key elements of the success strategy?

Very recently we have commenced import and trading in edible oils to meet the domestic market demand, as India is deficient in edible oil production. We have also operationalised our subsidiary company in Singapore, which will help develop and expand the company’s business.

6. How long have been associated with Goodrich?

I have personally been associated with Goodrich Group for over 12 years now.

7. What is the single most important benefit that you get from our service?

The volume of business with Goodrich Group has reduced over the last few years. The primary reason being that Goodrich doesn’t service the overseas destinations we are presently trading in. We do a good volume of business in the East Africa, the Middle East and Far East region, which we understand is predominantly a Liners’ market. We will be happy to support the Goodrich Group with good business volume once they provide services to those regions.

8. There is hardly any loyalty existing in today’s world. We are all chasing after the best deal that comes our way. So how do you suggest we get/maintain our fair share of attention from our Company?

I would personally suggest that Goodrich Group starts providing services to the African region to start with.

9. When it comes to documentation, you can outsource responsibility, but you can’t outsource liability. That’s why we make sure our company stays involved in the entire import/export process and we also train our customer service executives to give full support. However, do you feel there is any shortfall in our service?

The fact that I’ve been associated with Goodrich Group for over 12 years and always get reciprocal co-operation in smooth handling of documents. We look forward to strengthening the relationship in the years to come.

As you look forward into 2015, what are you personally most excited about it terms of your Company’s growth?
For our Company , the business remains subdued during the monsoon season particularly in case of sugar export which is one of our main exported and traded commodities .

10. Can you give us your insight on the current market trends of agricultural products?

The market for agricultural products is highly volatile and competitive. The international prices of agricultural products were mostly lower than those prevailing in India. With a bearish micro environment and lower returns, overseas investors were shy and there was a general exit of investment in commodities. This adversely affected Indian exports in agricultural commodities. Mismatch in prices is still continuing, which results in an overall fall in the export volume and rendering export business un-remunerative in general. Buoyancy continues in import of pulses and edible oils, due to domestic demand in excess of production of these commodities. Looking to the huge gap between demand and supply, import of these commodities will continue and for export, domestic prices of commodities to reconcile to global prices to remain competitive and regain lost share in global markets.

1. Can you give us a brief on your company?

We are basically a primary steel manufacturing company. We manufacture primary steel as well as secondary steel. Primary steel is known as HR Steel which is the basic raw material for all secondary steel. The secondary products are finished products like colour coating coils, colour coating sheets, corrugated sheets, GP coils etc. We are one the largest producers of both primary and secondary steel throughout PAN India. We export from PAN India basis and the region wise export per month on an average is as following:

Gulf – 31%
Africa – 40%
Europe – 10%
Far East – 3%
Latin America – 13%

In export we have two major categories, the break-bulk category and the other is containerized cargo. One of our major products i.e., API pipes which is produced in the Khopoli plant, Mumbai is exported in break-bulk from the Bombay port. HR (hot Rolled) coils which is produced in the Meramandali plant, Orissa is also exported in break-bulk from the Paradip port.

2. Do you have any sister concern or have you diversified into a whole new vertical?

Only STEEL, STEEL and STEEL!!!! We anticipate the steel market to be growing since there is a lot of demand in the market. We are however planning to enter into the Energy sector for which we have already set up Bhushan energy which is solely for self-consumption of our established plants.

Otherwise we are not looking into diversifying into any other commodity.

3. You’ve been associated with the Logistics industry for about 36 years now, was there a turning point/ high point in your career that you always recollect and cherish?

Initially when the company was set up, for the first few years we were exporting our products only through 20 ft containers. I then explored and suggested that the same commodity can be exported through break-bulk which will work out to be more cost effective. So we started with exporting to China and Antwerp.

Currently we are exporting through containers as well as break bulk. The drawback involved with break-bulk is the Inventory cost. We have to keep a minimum of 10,000 MT of cargo in stock which calls for high inventory cost in comparison with the freight that is being offered to us today and the rejection rate is moderately high for break bulk cargo. Customers tend to reject about 10% of the commodity on account of unsatisfactory quality or damages etc. So we try to keep a balance between break-bulk and the containerized cargo.
There was also a turning point of exporting HR coil from the “dead port” called Paradip port. About 3 years back we have started exporting HR coils from the Paradip port where we were interviewed for being the first steel exporter from Paradip.

4. How do you ensure you meet the requirements of your customer? Do you have a dedicated R&D team in place?

Ours is a tailor-made product. We produce the coils or the finished products based on the specifications provided by our customers like the thickness, colour coating, size design etc.

On an average, we export about 24000 containers annually on a PAN India basis where a major chunk is exported from the Khopoli plant.

5. What percentage of your customers would you rate as loyal customers?

The steel industry as whole is cyclical due to numerous factors that are beyond our control, including general domestic and international economic conditions, labour costs, competition costs, levels of inventory etc., and it becomes difficult to on-pass the cost to the customers as the market is very price sensitive.

There are too many commission agents and sales agents and the maximum sales goes via commission agents. But in our case we have a 50:50 ratio. 50% of our customers are direct customers e.g., In Europe and gulf sector we have direct customers.

6. We are aware that you are well spread out across the globe; however are there any specific regions/ countries that you are looking to foray into?

As Bhushan corporate we are looking at establishing our own distribution Centre at Nigeria which will later be converted into a plant. We already have our own distribution Centre at UAE & Djibouti.

7. What is your idea of an Ideal logistics company? Rank the below parameters based on what you value the most – Rates/Freight, Free Days, Credit Terms, Long Term Relationship.

An ideal logistics company is one that provides consistency in its services and provides competitive prices.
1. Rates/Freight
2. Long Term Relationship
3. Free Days
4. Credit Terms

8. What is the single most important benefit that you get from our service and how do you suggest we get/ maintain our fair share of attention from your company?

For a long time now we have and continue to share a very good relationship with Goodrich. As far as the service and competitive freight is concerned we have always been getting priority. The multiple locations, wherever we require our services, Goodrich has always provided. For e.g., very recently some cargo has been delivered to Vizag & Kolkata.

9. Can you give us your insight on the current market trends particularly pertaining to your industry?

As far as the steel industry is concerned, the steel consumption is less in India as compared to other countries so there is a vast scope of increasing the production capacity domestically and internationally. The present scenario is such that, there are volumes but the margins are very low and because of the low margins people are reluctant to produce and export.

10. How do you differentiate Bhushan Steel from other steel manufacturers?

Bhushan Steels Management policy is to only work on LC basis whereas other steel manufacturers work on advance basis. The moment the LC is open, we process the goods. Our delivery period is 33 days. Within 33 days we deliver the commodity irrespective of the quantity. Most of the steel manufacturers take orders in 1000’s, we even take orders for 25 MT. Our aim is to satisfy the needs of our customer.

We frequently hear about “LOI” during our day-to-day work, in connection with “Bills of Lading“ and rightful delivery of cargo. Hopefully we are all fortunate enough not to have come across the severe consequences of accepting an LOI.

Gone are the days when the cargo owner or his authorised representative used to accompany his cargo up to the discharge port to ensure rightful delivery of the cargo to the real consignee.

As the volume of the international trade increased, this practice became impractical; thereby placing the burden of rightful delivery on to the carrier. Today Bills of Lading are evolved from the simple receipt to the ‘document of title’. The document must now be presented in the original, by the legitimate owner of cargo at the discharge port, to claim his cargo.

Since the most advanced ships have started plying on our routes today, transit time is reduced considerably. Therefore, there is not the remotest chance of any original Bills of Lading being available to present to the carrier on arrival. Here an LOI has become the most acceptable cure, which amply indemnifies the carrier against a range of potential claims associated with wrongful delivery of cargo.

Sadly an LOI is not a legally binding document, but is rather a commercial document which is recognised and accepted at the sole discretion of the carrier. Moreover the status and validity of an LOI at law seems at best doubtful and its acceptance by the carrier brings with it certain risks of all possible loss of P&I cover. Considering the present demand of the trade, the carrier can’t rule out acceptance of an LOI if they want to prosper in the trade. Many of the carriers, have already burnt their fingers by accepting an LOI, but still the carriers are forced to approve these LOIs on a daily basis.

Today many of the carriers have started exercising more due diligence prior to accepting an LOI, by asking the shippers to complete a mini questionnaire that ask questions such as:

Where are your original Bills of Lading?

Why are they not been available?

Who are your bankers?

When will the original Bills of Lading be submitted to the carrier?

Who will be signing the LOI and whether he is your authorized person?

Needless to say, such a questionnaire will definitely reduce the risk, but can’t rule out the grave consequences that the carrier still has to take against acceptance of an LOI.

Probably the best way today is to eliminate the risk of accepting an LOI by using “Electronic Bills of Lading” which many of the carriers have already implemented in selected trades. The key advantage of using electronic Bills of Lading as compared to traditional paper bills is threefold – it saves time, reduces administrative burdens and in many cases, does away with the need for a carrier to have to decide whether to deliver cargo without the original Bills of Lading against a letter of indemnity.

The chance of an e-Bill not being available at the discharge port is very remote. Endorsement and transfer of title under an e-Bill is instantaneous and the e-Bill will always be available when the ship reaches the discharge port. The cargo receiver surrenders the e-Bill electronically to the Master who can then be certain that the delivery is made against an original e-Bill.

Many of us must be wondering how these e-Bills of Lading work?

e-Bills of Lading work by way of the carrier receiving a notification from the system by email that an e-Bill has been surrendered. This prompts the carrier to log in to the system and confirm this. In addition to receiving this confirmation, the carrier receives the electronic log of the activity with the e-Bill and a confirmation of the party who surrendered the e-Bill. The carrier communicates with the discharge port agent and the discharge port agent confirms with the party who has surrendered the e-bill, (what form of document or proof of identity is required) in order to take delivery.

Today while e-Bills are negotiable similar to the physical Bills of Lading and the International group of P&I Clubs have approved e-Bills, many of the International cargo conventions are yet to apply to e-Bills, to make them freely usable.

Probably the e-Bill could be a future document of commercial shipping.

At Goodrich, we focus on providing our customers excellence in services and products, with the highest desire to gain total customer satisfaction, confidence and enthusiasm. In view of this, we decided to interview one of our valued customers Mr. Natrajan, Assistant Manager – Exports, Forstar Frozen Foods Pvt. Ltd., to gauge his feedback on the services being provided by Goodrich. We greatly appreciate the time taken by Mr. Ajay to provide us his valuable views.

1. Describe the nature of your Business?

The company was set up 1995 and is today one of the largest exporters of seafood in the country. Our most widespread products are prawns and ribbon fish. The products are mainly exported to European countries, Japan and the Gulf region. Locally we also distribute ready-to-eat food items and pickles, under the brand name ‘Secret of Sea’.

2. How long have you been associated with Goodrich Maritime Pvt. Ltd.?

We have recently established a relationship with Goodrich – about 6 months to be precise.

3. What is the single most important benefit that you get from our services?

The rates are competitive and the service is very good. In future we will be looking into doing more shipments subject to the importers acceptance.

4. As you look ahead into 2015, what are you personally most excited about in terms of your company’s growth?

We are anticipating a growth rate of about 20-25% this financial year, subject to market favorability. Currently we do about 300-350 containers annually. South America and the Middle East are areas that we are looking into in the future.

5. In the future, how do you seek to benefit from your association with Goodrich?

As of now we have not done too many shipments with Goodrich as we are dealing with the Liners (MOL, Mitsui, etc.) on a yearly contract. But the shipments so far have been hassle free, compelling us to do more shipments with your company, subject to favorable terms.

6. Do you have any suggestions for improvement for both products and services?

We suggest you match the free days and the plug-in charges, as per the market offerings.

4. What is the IMDG code?

The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code contains provisions for the safe carriage of dangerous goods by sea.

The key objectives are:

Protect human life.
Prevent marine pollution
Facilitate the free movement of dangerous goods.
